Alton is a historic market town in East Hampshire, with roots stretching back to Saxon times and a notable Civil War battle around St Lawrence Church. It sits on the River Wey and today acts as a local hub for shopping, schooling and community services for the surrounding rural area. The townscape combines traditional High Street shops with Georgian and later architecture, giving it a classic small‑town Hampshire character.
The surrounding area is largely countryside on the northern edge of the South Downs, with fields, woodland and gently rolling hills typical of this part of Hampshire. Nearby villages such as Chawton, Holybourne and Selborne sit within this rural setting, and Alton functions as their main centre for everyday services and transport.
Alton lies roughly 50 miles south‑west of central London by road, a drive that typically takes around an hour and a half depending on traffic. The town also has a direct rail link to London Waterloo, with journey times in the region of 1 hour 5–15 minutes, which makes it a realistic commuter option for people working in the capital.
